Masada

Masada was an ancient fortification on the edge of the Judaean Desert overlooking the Dead Sea. It was built by Herod the Great between 37 and 31 BCE. A siege of Masada by Roman troops (from 73 to 74 CE) ended when, the Sicarii rebels and their families, some 960 people committed mass suicide. This ended the First Jewish-Roman War.
